Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business now requires students to work with artificial intelligence in their First-Year Project. This project is a nine-week course where students solve problems for real companies. Students work with clients and use AI to develop solutions. They get training from Microsoft before starting the project. The goal is to prepare students for using AI in business. Next year more students will work on AI projects.

The company uses AI to recreate the artist's original voice, allowing them to re-record their songs and regain control over them. This matters because artists like George often lose control over their songs, with labels and owners of master recordings earning money from licensing deals. For example, a recent licensing deal for George's song "Karma Chameleon" earned $4 million, but George did not receive any of it. The company's first release is a newly recorded version of "Karma Chameleon" that uses AI to recreate George's 22-year-old voice. Boy George will continue to use AI to reclaim his music catalog.

AI-Generated "Slop" is Making Our World More Hyper-Palatable and Less Nuanced

AI-generated content, often referred to as "AI slop," is reshaping our cultural landscape in ways that feel increasingly simplistic and exaggerated. This phenomenon, called hyperslopification, occurs when AI outputs-like images, videos, or text-capitalize on human preferences for symmetry, cuteness, and other hyper-stimulating traits. These traits are akin to how junk food uses salt, fat, and sugar to entice us, but in the digital realm, they create content that's both addictive and oversimplified. The term "hyperpalatability" describes how AI exploits our evolved preferences for easy-to-consume aesthetics and visceral reactions. Social media and recommendation algorithms have already nudged culture toward clickbait and sensationalism, but generative AI amplifies this trend by prioritizing metrics that are simple to measure, like symmetry and legibility. Techniques like RLHF (Reward Learning with Human Feedback) inadvertently push AI toward these hyper-stimulating outputs, as they align closely with human preferences. Looking ahead, hyperslopification could further simplify and distort cultural norms, potentially eroding nuance in art, communication, and social interactions. As AI becomes more prevalent, the balance between satisfying immediate human desires and preserving complexity will be crucial to maintaining a rich and varied cultural ecosystem.

Students Concerned About AI Dependence

Students are using AI tools for coursework but are concerned about dependence on them. Four in 10 students are worried about relying too much on AI. At the same time, six in 10 see AI as a learning support tool. Many students expect AI to negatively impact their career prospects. Institutions have not been successful in helping students navigate AI and its impact on their futures. Students will likely continue to seek more guidance on using AI effectively.

AI Productivity Boost Remains Elusive
